Chargers designate Sproles Franchise Player
San Diego Chargers running back and kick returner Darren Sproles has been designated the team’s Franchise Player for the 2009 season.
Sproles, 25, was designated a “non-exclusive” Franchise Player, which means that he can still negotiate with other teams. Should he receive an offer from another team, the Chargers can either match the new club’s offer or receive two first-round draft choices as compensation.
As a “non-exclusive” Franchise Player, Sproles received a one-year contract offer from the Chargers that is the average of the top five salaried running backs from the ’08 season. The Chargers and Sproles also may continue to negotiate a long-term contract.
“Darren has been a valuable contributor to our team, both on offense and special teams,” said General Manager A.J. Smith. “He is a young and improving player. We expect we’ll utilize his many talents as we have in the past and he’ll be a valuable asset in the coming season.”
Sproles has publicly said he wants to be a Charger, but also that he wants to test the free-agent market.
"We plan on Darren being here,” Smith said. “If he gets an offer sheet (from another team), he will cost a team two No. 1s, or we could match the offer. Obviously we don’t know what other teams think about Darren."
Smith said today’s decision has no impact on the contract status of running back LaDainian Tomlinson.
“This does not affect our ability to negotiate a new contract with LT. We’re hopeful of getting a new deal done with him.”
The last player to be designated the team’s Franchise Player was quarterback Drew Brees in 2005.

Are Raider fans really as dumb as their team?
By: J.D. Harrison
ChargerNation Staff Writer
The answer is YES!!
In 2006, running back LaDainian Tomlinson scored 186
points. He outscored the entire Oakland Raiders team,
which scored a total of 168 points.
Yet somehow the Raiders still seem to think that they can talk shit just because they had a couple winning seasons in the ancient past. Does a team's past really matter? When you watch the game on Sundays, are you really thinking about how your team did in the past?
Being proud of a team's past is fine, but Raider fans can't distinguish the difference between team and franchise. Ya your franchise has done mediocre, but your ACTUAL CURRENT TEAM is a disgrace to football!
The Oakland Raiders are a piss poor excuse for a team.
Everything about them is sad and shameful. From their prissy fans , to their disgusting city in the Gay Area, the Oakland Raiders still uphold the title of the worst, most laughable team in NFL.
I guess I would be pretty pissed too if my arch rival kicked my ass more times than any other football team in NFL history. Clearly the Raider fans have no room to talk!
So whenever you see a Jokeland failure fan trying to talk shit, just realize it for what its is.....just another Raider fairy who knows nothing about the actual game of football, just like their so-called "team"!
The best the Raiders can hope for this year, is to try and not shit themselves when the Chargers, well, as you can see below, do the same thing they always do.....beat their ass!
2003 - Week 17 Jokeland @ Chargers Chargers WON 21 - 14
2004 - Week 8 Jokeland @ Chargers Chargers WON 42 - 14
2004 - Week 11 Chargers @ Jokeland Chargers WON 23 - 17
2005 - Week 6 Chargers @ Jokeland Chargers WON 27 - 14
2005 - Week 13 Jokeland @ Chargers Chargers WON 34 - 10
2006 - Week 1 Chargers @ Chokeland Chargers WON 27 - 0
2006 - Week 12 Chokeland @ Chargers Chargers WON 21-14
2007 - Week 6 Chokeland @ Chargers Chargers WON 28-14
2007 - Week 17 Chargers @ Chokeland Chargers WON 30-17
2008 - Week 4 Chargers @ Chokeland Chargers WON 28-19
2008 - Week 13 Chokeland @ Chargers Chargers WON 34-7

San Diego, California - Head Coach Norv Turner led the 2008 San Diego Chargers to one of the greatest turnaround seasons in NFL history, culminating with a trip to the AFC’s Divisional Playoffs. The Bolts finished the year 9-9, including playoffs, but the team will best be remembered for its determination to overcome a 4-8 start to win the AFC West for the third year in a row.

Jamal Williams arrested on suspicion of DUI
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Chargers defensive tackle Jamal Williams was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, the team's second such arrest in less than a month.
Williams was pulled over for speeding early Sunday on a freeway outside downtown, the California Highway Patrol said. Williams gave a blood sample for a blood-alcohol test, but the results were not yet known. Williams was booked into county jail and later released on bail.
The City Attorney's office said the case hadn't been submitted as of Tuesday.
"It's disappointing to hear about the issue involving Jamal Williams," general manager A.J. Smith said in a statement released by the team. "We'll continue to monitor the situation and let the legal process run its course.
"The Chargers have always been leaders and positive contributors to our community," Smith added. "We take our stature in the community very seriously. Through the Chargers and the NFL, our players receive one of the most comprehensive education and support programs in sports to help them deal with issues that affect all segments of society."
Smith didn't return a call seeking further comment.
Chargers receiver Vincent Jackson was arrested for investigation of DUI on Jan. 6, five days before San Diego's playoff loss at Pittsburgh. Jackson is due in court Feb. 17. He was on probation for a previous DUI arrest, the CHP said.
Williams, an 11-year veteran, shared the team's Most Valuable Player Award with quarterback Philip Rivers this season. The Chargers reached the playoffs with an 8-8 record.
Smith often speaks of signing "character" players, yet the Chargers have had their share of off-field problems in recent seasons.
In 2006, there were seven run-ins with the law by Chargers players, including linebacker Steve Foley's shooting by an off-duty Coronado police officer who suspected him of drunken driving, and two other players who were arrested for investigation of DUI.
Besides the arrests, linebacker Shawne Merriman was suspended four games for testing positive for steroids in 2006, and linebacker Stephen Cooper was suspended by the NFL for the first four games of the 2008 season after testing positive for a banned stimulant.

San Diego's suit vs. Chargers dismissed
SAN DIEGO (AP) — A lawsuit filed by the city of San Diego against the NFL's Chargers has been dismissed and the two sides have agreed to work out several accounting disputes that have gone unresolved during the past four years.
The city filed a breach-of-contract suit against the Chargers last month, claiming the team owes the city more than $170,000 for use of Qualcomm Stadium in 2004.
City attorney Jan Goldsmith, who was elected in November, said the suit was filed just days before the four-year statute of limitations expired. Goldsmith said the matter should have been handled years ago.
"This is the responsible thing to do," Goldsmith said Tuesday. "I thank the city and the Chargers for this agreement. Litigation is expensive and often unnecessary. We want to resolve matters before litigation if at all possible. I'm hopeful that the financial analysts can resolve these accounting issues."
